Preserving Chicago Southland's
History Through Research & Education
Southland Food Access Project
The USDA has administered Adult and Household Food Security surveys since 1995 with questions strictly centering the monetary aspect of food security. While affordability is a vital component in tracking food access, it is not the only factor of impact.

The Southland Food Access project focuses on Chicago Southland residents’ access to quality food sources based on a variety of indicators such as cost, time, transportation, availability of cultural foods, and distance to grocery stores. For the purposes of this research, one on one interviews with community members are conducted to assist in the narration and documentation of a collective food story. This personal approach seeks to explore how our community cultivates Southland resident's access to food and food security.
